User manual for your RetroPC
Your RetroPC has been restored and configured so you can enjoy it with no complications. Here you will find how to power it on, shut it down properly and use both MS-DOS and Windows 98.
Powering on the computer
Connect the tower, monitor, keyboard, mouse and speakers if included. Turn on the monitor first, then the tower. After a few seconds the boot menu will appear.
Dual boot: MS-DOS or Windows 98
Use the arrow keys to select the system. MS-DOS is ideal for pure classic games. Windows 98 provides a full graphical interface. If you do nothing, the default system will boot automatically.
Shutting down correctly
In MS-DOS, exit the game until you see the command prompt, then turn off the PC. In Windows 98 use Start → Shut down. When the screen says it is safe to turn off, use the tower button.
Basic MS-DOS usage
DIR shows the files and folders of the current directory. CD lets you enter or leave folders: for example CD GAMES or CD .. to go back.
To run a game, type the name of the .EXE or .BAT file without extension, for example MONKEY or DOOM.
You can switch drive by typing C: or D:. F3 repeats the last command.
Running games
Many games are inside their own folders. Navigate using CD, list with DIR and execute the main file. If a game does not start, make sure you are in the correct folder.
Returning to Windows 98
To use Windows 98, reboot the PC and select it in the boot menu. This is the cleanest and safest method.
